Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

Quite simply the most requested guitar song of all time.

There are some challenges to playing the song – some partial barres and some chords that aren’t standard chord shapes, but don’t be alarmed now, (even if there’s a bustle in your hedgerow…)

We’ve covered the song in three parts. The first part gives you the famous fingerpicked intro, taught just as Jimmy Page plays it, and goes through to where the fingerpicking ends and the strummed chords start. The second part picks up the song from the first strummed section and takes it through to the point the solo starts. In other words, parts 1 and 2 cover all the acoustic parts of the song.

Part 3 then breaks the guitar solo down carefully note-by-note. Quire a bit of time is spent on this section because of the complexity of the playing.

Be warned – this is a very complex solo that will take a lot of practice to get up to speed. Then we teach the heavy rock outro – ‘…and as we wind on down the road…’, right through to the very end of the track.

In other words, you’ve got everything here that you need
to play this classic song from start to finish.

Despite its impenetrable lyrics the song is Led Zep’s most popular, largely due to the famous and beautiful guitar intro that you’ll be learning with these videos. It comes from the album Led Zeppelin IV which first hit the shops in 1971.

Although it was never released as a single, it is regularly voted at, or close to, number one on lists of greatest song of all time.

When MTV viewers voted their top 100 in 2000, Stairway came in at number 3.

It’s well-known that Jimmy Page liked to write by starting with another piece as a jumping off point for a new song. The band had been touring with Randy California’s band Spirit the previous year, and it’s very interesting to listen to Spirit’s tune ‘Taurus’ which pre-dates Stairway To Heaven.
